The FDA granted 510(k) clearance to Miami-based VertigoDx for its SmartVertigo vestibular assessment system. The portable device combines a smartphone, a light-blocking headset, and software that tracks involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) to differentiate inner ear issues like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) from central nervous system disorders. The system has been used on more than 1,200 patients over the past three years, replacing traditional infrared video-oculography with color video that captures subtler findings.
VertigoDx, a medtech startup founded by brothers Trevor Meyerowitz (CMO) and Stephen Meyerowitz (CTO) and led by CEO Paul Louis, is the direct beneficiary of this clearance. The SmartVertigo is a prescription point-of-care platform targeting clinicians diagnosing vertigo and dizziness. Competitor Otolith Labs, backed by Mark Cuban, previously received breakthrough device designation for a noninvasive treatment for chronic vertigo symptoms, but this clearance turns VertigoDx into a commercial-ready diagnostic player.
VertigoDx’s commercialization strategy—how it builds distribution partnerships, hires sales teams, and targets key accounts in the dizziness diagnostic space. Also watch for competitive responses, especially from Otolith Labs, which may pivot from treatment to diagnostic integration. The company’s next steps after 510(k) clearance will signal its readiness to scale operations and revenue.
