Paychex opened fiscal 2027 with broad-based growth led by PEO and Insurance Solutions, while Management Solutions grew more slowly because clients migrated into the higher-value PEO segment. Operating leverage from AI-driven automation and cost discipline pushed margins higher despite continued strategic investment.

  • Total revenue: $1.6 billion, up 6% YoY. Growth was driven by PEO worksite employee gains and strong ASO-to-PEO upgrades, partially offset by revenue shifting out of Management Solutions into PEO reporting.
  • Diluted EPS: $1.21, up 14%; adjusted diluted EPS: $1.34, up 10%. Earnings growth outpaced revenue growth thanks to margin expansion and lower acquisition-related costs.
  • Operating margin: 38%, expanded 280 bps; adjusted operating margin: approximately 42%, up approximately 130 bps. AI efficiencies and lower one-time costs offset higher PEO direct insurance costs and go-to-market investments.
  • Management Solutions revenue: $1.2 billion, up 4%. Pricing remained consistent with historical performance, retention improved, and product penetration met expectations, but ASO-to-PEO migration reduced reported segment growth.
  • PEO and Insurance Solutions revenue: $368 million, up 12%. Worksite employee growth reached the high single digits, just below double digits, with record retention and conversion activity twice management's expectations.
  • Interest on funds held for clients: $50 million, up 5%. Stronger reinvestment yields on the long-term portfolio drove the increase, and full-year guidance was updated to $200-$210 million reflecting the latest rate change.

Management Commentary

Management framed fiscal 2027 around three priorities: data and AI leadership, go-to-market evolution, and advisory differentiation. AI spending is running at five times the prior-year level, and the WISE intelligence engine now draws on more than 50 trillion proprietary data points across payroll, HR, benefits, and workforce workflows.

In a pilot covering more than 50,000 businesses, WISE helped prevent approximately 90% of targeted payroll errors. Paychex is now expanding those capabilities across additional use cases. Automated payroll processing increased nearly 20% from January through August, while service quality and accuracy rates held steady.

The company has deployed over 2,000 AI agents and features across the business and has equipped more than 10,000 employees with AI tools. This week Paychex launched WISE Hire, an agentic recruiting solution for small and midsized businesses that uses AI agents to source candidates, screen applicants, manage outreach, and schedule interviews while keeping human recruiters available for complex needs.

PEO was the standout segment. ASO-to-PEO conversions came in at twice management's expectations, and an ASO client moving to PEO generates approximately 3.5 times the revenue with higher retention and lifetime value. Referrals from HCM sales teams into PEO increased almost 50% YoY, and broker referrals rose 43%. Paychex signed its third national broker partnership in six months, this time with IMA Financial Group.

On guidance, management reaffirmed fiscal 2027 total revenue growth of 5%-6% and raised PEO and Insurance Solutions revenue growth to 7%-8%. Q2 revenue growth is expected at approximately 4% with an adjusted operating margin of approximately 40%, though excluding two prior-year one-time items, Q2 growth would be roughly in line with Q1's 6%.

Strategic Implications

The most important structural story this quarter is the mix shift from Management Solutions into PEO. When ASO clients upgrade to PEO, Paychex gains a client with materially higher revenue, better retention, and greater lifetime value. Management explicitly said this shift is favorable even though it depresses reported Management Solutions growth in the near term.

Enterprise bookings grew at a double-digit rate, with strength in broker bookings and average deal size. Revenue across businesses serving clients with more than 100 employees remained in the high single digits, consistent with fiscal Q4 2026. This suggests Paychex's upmarket motion is holding even as SMB demand stays flat.

The Paycor integration continues to track on plan for revenue synergies. Paychex launched its Perks product to 2.5 million employees on the Paycor platform, and the broader Perks product exceeded 450,000 enrolled employees with double-digit growth. These cross-platform initiatives give Paychex additional distribution without requiring new customer acquisition.

AI is still in the investment phase, but early returns are visible. Payroll automation gains, error prevention, and margin expansion all point to operational leverage. Paychex is embedding AI into premium bundles while also selling WISE Hire and its HR compliance tool as standalone products, creating both efficiency and new revenue paths.

Extending WISE into Microsoft business applications broadens the surface area where Paychex intelligence can act, moving AI closer to where customers already work rather than requiring them to enter a separate system.

The broker channel is becoming a more meaningful acquisition engine. Three national broker partnerships in six months, combined with 43% referral growth, indicate that Paychex is building a repeatable partner-led funnel that competes less on direct sales cost and more on distribution reach.

What to Watch Next

I would watch four things over the next two quarters:

  • PEO conversion sustainability. Q1 conversions ran at twice expectations, and management cautioned this may normalize. The October and January enrollment periods will reveal whether the elevated pace is structural or a one-time pull-forward.
  • Management Solutions reacceleration. If PEO conversions slow, reported Management Solutions growth should recover. The full-year 5%-6% guidance assumes some back-half acceleration, so segment mix in Q2 and Q3 matters.
  • AI monetization. WISE Hire and the HR compliance tool are now sellable as standalone products. I want to see whether these generate incremental revenue or primarily bundle into existing deals, and whether automated payroll processing continues its 20% growth trajectory.
  • Q2 comparison dynamics. Reported Q2 revenue growth of approximately 4% reflects two prior-year one-time items. Underlying growth should be closer to 6%, so the gap between reported and organic growth will determine whether the market reads Q2 as deceleration or stability.
