GSK is cutting more than 1,200 roles across its Belgium sites — Rixensart, Wavre and Gembloux — as part of a $2.5 billion global restructuring announced in July 2026. The company confirmed to BioSpace that the reductions could affect up to 1,217 employees and are intended to streamline research, manufacturing and support operations, in part through digital and automation tools.
The layoffs will impact roles across GSK's research, manufacturing and support functions at the three Belgian sites. Even after the cuts, GSK stated it will remain the largest biopharma employer in Belgium, with the country serving as a major hub for vaccines manufacturing, contributing over 50% of the company's global vaccine operations.
Implementing the restructuring will play out over three years. Expect further global job cuts beyond Belgium, as the company consolidates manufacturing (e.g., shutting a German site). Vaccine manufacturing output at the Belgian hub and pipeline progression will be key indicators of how the reshaping affects the broader biopharma landscape.
