Enanta Pharmaceuticals has laid off 37 employees across all departments, reducing its headcount from 120 to roughly 83. The company described the move as a “difficult decision to right-size” after a careful evaluation of resources needed to execute current priorities.
The layoffs come as Enanta prepares for a “catalyst rich year ahead,” including topline data from its phase 2b RSV trial and phase 1 urticaria program.
The cuts affect all departments at Enanta’s Watertown, MA headquarters. The company said it now has “the right team in place” to continue delivering on business goals, implying remaining staff will absorb additional responsibilities.
Affected employees include roles across R&D, clinical operations, and corporate functions, though specific titles were not disclosed.
Enanta reported $14.4M in quarterly revenue (all royalties from AbbVie-licensed hepatitis C treatment Mavyret) and $211.5M in cash as of June. The restructuring is designed to extend runway and reallocate spend toward pipeline catalysts.
Investors and vendors should track topline data from the phase 2b Lotus trial of zelicapavir in infants, expected next year. The company also plans to start a phase 2b/3 trial in high-risk adults by end of 2025.
Before year-end, watch for phase 1 data for EDP-978 in urticaria. Note that zelicapavir previously failed a midstage adult trial, so subgroup analyses and the new trial designs will be scrutinized for commercial viability.
