Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, announced a ~$1B expansion of its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant to produce prismatic lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) batteries at scale—the world's first such facility. The expansion will begin later in 2026 and complete by 2028, adding 500 jobs to the current 1,200 staff. LMR batteries have a concentration of about 65% manganese and 35% nickel, offering lower cost and higher energy density than traditional lithium batteries.
The expansion directly impacts GM's EV supply chain, as LMR batteries will be installed in full-size trucks and SUVs with a range upwards of 400 miles. The plant's workforce will grow to 1,700 employees. Vendors providing factory automation, MES, supply-chain software, and workforce management tools have a multi-year engagement window. The broader manufacturing landscape in Tennessee has seen disruptions due to federal policy changes, but Ultium Cells is proceeding with this investment.
The expansion timeline (2026–2028) provides a sustained procurement cycle for equipment, facility automation, and workforce training. Watch for RFPs related to factory automation, MES implementation, and supply-chain software. Also monitor GM's EV sales recovery and any policy shifts that could affect battery demand or federal funding for clean energy projects.
