What Happened

BMW Group has started series production of sixth-generation (Gen6) high-voltage batteries at its new Plant Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Lower Bavaria, representing an investment of around €1 billion ($1.13 billion). The plant will serve as the central battery supplier for BMW's German vehicle plants, beginning with packs for the new BMW i3.

BMW credits the rapid ramp-up (less than two years from construction start) to digital planning tools and cooperation with local partners. The facility uses in-house AI assistants and agents to analyze production data in real time for zero-defect output, and digital twins supported planning and employee training.

Who Is Affected

BMW's German vehicle plants in Dingolfing, Regensburg, and Munich will receive Gen6 batteries from this plant. The site directly employs regional workers, and more than three-quarters of its plant engineering firms are German, with two-thirds of construction companies coming from Bavaria.

Market Impact

  • BMW's €1B investment signals continued commitment to German industrial production and electromobility, with the plant requiring no fossil fuels for regular operations.
  • The plant's use of AI assistants, digital twins, and inline monitoring creates direct opportunities for vendors of factory automation, AI/OEE software, and production-monitoring solutions.
  • BMW is building five Gen6 battery assembly facilities globally under a 'local for local' principle, with additional sites in Hungary, China, USA, and Mexico.

What to Watch

The ramp-up of the Neue Klasse model line and the performance of the Gen6 battery technology in the i3 will be key indicators of future demand. BMW's cell recycling competence center in Salching, which began operating in December 2025 using a direct recycling method, will also influence long-term sustainability and supply chain dynamics.
