Date
Artiva Biotherapeutics halted development of AlloNK, its allogeneic NK cell therapy for autoimmune diseases, after two patient deaths and declining durability data. The company laid off 94% of its 115 full-time employees and is evaluating strategic alternatives, including a merger, asset sale, or liquidation.
One death was linked to fludarabine in the lymphodepletion regimen; the other cause unknown. The FDA paused enrollment in the phase 2a study. This reverses Artiva's previous plans to enter a pivotal phase 3 trial in RA this year following a $300 million raise in May.
The layoffs impact 108 of 115 employees across all functions, with only a skeleton crew likely retained for strategic review. Artiva's shareholders, including recent investors from the $300 million round, face potential total loss or significant dilution. Service providers to biotech companies (CROs, labs, IT vendors) lose contracts; meanwhile, potential acquirers like BMS and Novartis, which also paused autoimmune cell therapy programs, may be interested in Artiva's cash and IP.
The strategic review outcome by early 2027 will determine whether Artiva is acquired, sells assets, or liquidates. Any interested party will likely move quickly given the cash burn rate and public company disclosure requirements. Indications of interest from large pharma or cell therapy specialists are key signals.
