Artiva Biotherapeutics announced Tuesday that it is ending development of AlloNK, its lead allogeneic NK cell therapy, following a risk-benefit review. The decision came after two patient deaths in a Phase 2a basket autoimmune disease trial and longer-term follow-up data that failed to show sufficient clinical response durability.
The company is cutting 94% of its workforce, leaving fewer than 10 of its 115 employees. It also canned a planned Phase 3 pivotal trial and is exploring strategic options including a merger, business combination, sale or licensing of assets, or dissolution and liquidation.
The layoffs affect approximately 108 employees, based on the company's 115 employees as of June 30. Artiva expects to complete the workforce reduction in the first quarter of 2027.
The FDA, investigators, and a data safety monitoring board had paused enrollment and dosing after the first death was reported. The second death was deemed unrelated to AlloNK, but a cause has not yet been determined.
Artiva still holds ~$319.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and investments as of September 30, making it a viable M&A or licensing counterparty despite the pipeline setback.
Watch for Artiva's next strategic announcement — whether it pursues a merger, asset sale, or dissolution. The timeline for the workforce reduction and any buyer interest in AlloNK or the company's cash position will shape follow-up outreach.
Also monitor how the FDA and data safety monitoring board's response to the patient deaths influences other cell therapy developers' regulatory planning, as that may create additional account activity in the autoimmune space.
