AMD has confirmed it will acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal, bringing Dr. Fei-Fei Li's AI research team into the company. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Dr. Lisa Su.
The World Labs team will continue its AI model research in San Francisco and become AMD's frontier research organisation, focused on building an end-to-end open AI ecosystem spanning hardware, software, platforms, and open models.
AMD's AI division gains a major research arm and a high-profile chief scientist, creating immediate integration needs across tooling, infrastructure, and platform development. World Labs employees transition from an independent startup to AMD's frontier research org, bringing new processes, systems, and vendor needs.
Nvidia faces a stronger competitor as AMD deepens its AI capabilities. Existing AMD shareholders will see dilution from the all-stock issuance, though AMD's recent $1 trillion market cap supports the deal.
Citigroup analyst Atif Malik cited three motivations for the deal: acquiring leading AI engineers, better positioning AMD in physical AI, and building better end-to-end systems. Malik maintains AMD as his favorite growth compute semis pick in 2026.
The deal is expected to close before the end of this year, creating a narrow window for vendors to engage both AMD's AI division and the World Labs team during integration. Watch for how AMD operationalizes World Labs' research into its hardware and software roadmap, and whether this accelerates AMD's push into physical AI.
