AfDB approved $66M in funding ($46M from its own resources, $20M from Climate Investment Funds) for a 25-year solar project in Qena, Egypt. The 1373 GWh/year photovoltaic plant with battery storage will power EgyptAlum's aluminum production, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 500K tons.
Egypt Aluminium Company (EgyptAlum) is the sole off-taker under a 25-year PPA. The project directly supports 6,000+ jobs tied to EU Carbon Border Adjustment compliance. AfDB and Climate Investment Funds are lead financiers, with additional DFI funding expected.
Monitor EgyptAlum's vendor RFPs in 2024-2025 for plant construction. Track additional DFI participants joining the $290M project. Watch for replication opportunities at other African industrial facilities facing carbon tariffs.
