Shionogi acquired Texas-based rare disease biotech IntraBio for $2 billion, gaining the marketed drug Aqneursa. Aqneursa is approved in the U.S. for Niemann-Pick disease type C and Ataxia-Telangiectasia, and generated $68 million in sales in 2025. The deal also includes an experimental treatment for Fragile X syndrome acquired through Shionogi's 2020 buyout of Tetra Therapeutics, now in Phase 3, plus early-stage rare neurodegenerative programs.
IntraBio's employees, leadership, and existing partners will integrate into Shionogi's rare disease business. Shionogi's rare disease division gains a commercial-stage asset and pipeline programs. Competitors in rare disease, such as those developing therapies for Niemann-Pick type C or Fragile X, may face a strengthened rival. Patients and advocacy groups for these conditions will see a larger, more resourced company behind Aqneursa.
Watch for integration updates from Shionogi's rare disease division, including commercial team restructuring and supply chain changes for Aqneursa. Also monitor the Phase 3 Fragile X trial results and any early-stage pipeline disclosures. Competitors like Merck and Daiichi Sankyo may adjust their rare disease strategies in response.
