Musixmatch, the TPG-backed music data company based in Bologna, has acquired Music Reports and its Songdex rights registry, along with Blokur. This is the company's first acquisition in its 17-year history. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Tikehau Capital provided the financing after setting up senior financing for Musixmatch in 2024.
The acquisition supports Musixmatch's goal of building an exhaustive music copyright registry and tackling the black box of royalties where beneficiaries cannot be identified. Songdex will retain its independence and impartial approach to rights holder identification as it integrates into the group.
Music rights holders, songwriters, and creators who are currently missing out on royalty payments due to unidentified beneficiaries are directly affected. Musixmatch's CEO Max Ciociola stated that the difficulty in identifying composers, rights holders, and payment beneficiaries penalizes creators, and the acquisition brings both companies' datasets onto one platform.
The move also impacts AI music platforms and user-generated content services, as Musixmatch has launched Sentinel (in March) for real-time copyright detection on such platforms.
This consolidation in music royalty data infrastructure addresses the industry's payment black box and signals a shift toward AI-driven royalty management.
Watch how Songdex's independent registry integrates with Musixmatch's platform while maintaining neutrality. Also monitor the rollout of autonomous royalty management agents, where AI proposes matches and humans handle unresolved questions.
Tikehau Capital's financing role suggests ongoing investor confidence in Musixmatch's scale-up trajectory, which could lead to further acquisitions or platform expansions.
