Microsoft cut 277 jobs in Washington state as part of a global restructuring announced earlier this week. The WARN Act filing, made public September 24, shows 252 of the affected positions are based at Microsoft's Redmond campus, with 25 held by remote employees in the region.
The cuts are part of a broader Xbox restructuring affecting 268 employees in Xbox Game Studios, out of fewer than 600 globally. Halo Studios in Redmond saw a substantial reduction, and work on the next Halo game is moving to Activision.
Software engineering is the largest single category, with 60 roles. Art, game production, game design, technical art, and audio design together account for 77 of the 277 positions listed in the filing.
Other affected functions include product marketing, technical writing, product management, data science, business management, finance, and legal. This follows Microsoft's earlier cuts of 605 Washington jobs in July and more than 15,000 positions globally across two rounds in 2025.
Microsoft's continued restructuring signals ongoing budget reallocation and potential vendor consolidation, which can create urgency for solutions that improve efficiency or support workforce transitions.
Microsoft's statement that the Xbox restructuring is designed to return the games division to growth and profitability suggests further organizational changes may follow. The move of Halo development to Activision indicates where future investment may be directed.
For Bay Area and Seattle-area sellers, watch for new job requisitions, team leaders who have moved to other companies, and any Microsoft vendors that may be dropped as part of the cost-reduction effort.
