Kura Oncology has spun out its diabetes-focused menin inhibitor program into a new startup, Caspian Therapeutics. The spinout is backed by Eli Lilly's corporate venture arm. Caspian will develop KO-7246, a menin inhibitor targeting Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic conditions. The company is currently in preclinical stages and has not disclosed a timeline for human testing.
Caspian Therapeutics is the primary protagonist—a US-based, funded startup with a dedicated team and capital. Kura Oncology benefits by focusing resources on oncology while retaining upside. Competitor Biomea Fusion is ahead in mid-stage testing for a similar menin inhibitor. Vendors serving preclinical and clinical biotech companies (CROs, software, regulatory) have a new, funded account to target.
Caspian will present additional preclinical data at a medical meeting later this month. The company's timeline for first human trials is a key milestone. Watch for partnership announcements with CROs or clinical trial software vendors, as well as how competitive positioning evolves against Biomea Fusion's advancing program.
