Chime has agreed to acquire Stride Bank, N.A. for $590 million in cash. The deal ends a seven-year sponsor bank arrangement, with Stride having been the licensed partner that allowed Chime to offer accounts and cards. Once closed, Stride will be renamed Chime Bank, N.A. and run as a wholly owned subsidiary of Chime. The price is approximately 1.5 times Stride's tangible book value, and Chime will pay from its own balance sheet without raising additional capital.
Chime's leadership and Stride's team are directly impacted. Chris Britt, CEO and co-founder of Chime, will lead the combined entity, while Stride Chairman and CEO Brud Baker will continue to lead the renamed Chime Bank. The deal affects Chime's 50-state customer base, as the company expects to serve customers directly in all states once the acquisition closes. Banking regulators must also approve the transaction.
The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to approval from US banking regulators. Watch for regulatory scrutiny and any conditions imposed. Also monitor how Chime integrates Stride's national charter and team, and whether other neobanks follow suit with similar acquisitions.
